India too was hooked on to this bandwagon without second thoughts. Billions of people from villages to metropolitan cities cannot live a full day without internet at their disposal now. Here are the 20 countries where world’s biggest internet population lives, compiled by Rediff.
#1 China
China, officially known as People’s Republic of China has an estimated total population of 1.34 billion as per 2012. The country ranks 1st in terms of Internet users as the total Internet users range up to 538 million. The penetration in population has risen to 40.1 percent and China holds a share of 22.4 percent among worldwide users.
#2 United States
The Internet in the United States provided the base for the world-wide Internet of today. The Internet access in the U.S. is largely provided by the private sector and is available in various forms and technologies. Out of the estimated total population of 313.84 million, the total Internet users consist of 245, 203, 319 which has led to a penetration of 78.1 percent in population and U.S has 10.2 percent share of worldwide that has made rank 2nd in terms of Internet users.

India’s telecommunication industry, which consists of mobile, telephone, broadcast and Internet underwent a high pace of market liberalization and growth since 1990s and has grown over twenty times within ten years. Currently, it has the world’s 3rdlargest Internet user-base with over 137 million out of an estimated total population of 1.20 billion. There has been 11.4 percent penetration in the usage and India has a share of 5.7 percent share of users worldwide.

Japan, an island nation in East Asia has an estimated total population of 127.36 million out of which 101, 228, 736 are active Internet users. Thus, it shows a penetration of 79.5 percent in population and country’s share ranges up to 4.2 percent among the worldwide users which ranks it the 4thposition.

The Internet in Brazil was launched in 1988. Currently it has a user base of 88,494,756 out of an estimated total population of 193.94 million. Germany ranks the 7th position in terms of Internet users where it has Internet users of 67,483,860 out of an estimated population of 81.30 million as per 2012. Germany has a penetration of 83 percent in terms of Internet usage and thus it has a share of 2.8percent among the worldwide users.
# 8 Indonesia
Internet in Indonesia is relatively a new communication media in Indonesia. Several Inetrnet services are available in the country, ranging from ADSL to mobile internet. It has a user base of 55 million out of a total population of 248.64 million which has led to a penetration of 22.1 percent of Internet usage. Currently, it has 2.3 percent of worldwide users which makes it the 8th country to have the most Internet users.

Initially, the broadband Internet access in U.K was provided by a large number of regional cable television and telephone companies. The United Kingdom has an estimated total population of 63.04 million out of which 52,731,209 are active Internet users. Thus, it shows a penetration of 83.6 percent in population and country’s share ranges up to 2.2 percent among the worldwide users which ranks it the 9th position.
